Almost every little girl loves playing with her dolls – feeding and pampering them, even changing their diapers like it was a child of their own, or even a best friend they never had.
But then, some stories of dolls have been tainted when the film ‘Child’s Play’ came along and the evil Chucky visited every little girls' and even adults’ nightmares.
It seems like nightmares can haunt you in real life, as a remote wooded area in Xochimilco, in Mexico city, or known as the 'Island of the Dolls' is filled with thousands of mutilated dolls hanging from trees, and is believed to be haunted.
Legend has it that a little girl drowned in the canal 50 years ago, and her tormented screams and footsteps were heard at night by artist Julian Santana Barrera, who began to hang hundreds of dolls from the trees to appease her ghost.
Barrera found the girl's corpse floating in the canal and blamed himself for not being able to save her life. He also discovered a doll floating in the same waters, and assuming it belonged to her, he hung it from a tree as a sign of respect.
After five decades, in 2011, Barrera's nephew found him dead, in the same canal where he found the little girl. His death was a mysterious one, and some even claim, he had made up the tale after years of isolation in the woods.
The spine-chilling sight is now a popular tourist attraction, and visitors have brought more dolls - which now number in the thousands. Some, even leave coins and trinkets at the shrine.
