Scotland's 'most-haunted' mansion suffers mysterious collapse

The walls of Birkwood Castle in Lanarkshire collapsed on Tuesday evening, resulting in a noise so loud that locals thought they had heard an explosion.

A mansion famed as one of Scotland’s most haunted places has had a mysterious collapse.

Neo-Gothic Birkwood Castle, near Lesmahagow in Lanarkshire , had a serious bump in the night when part of its walls fell down.

They collapsed with such force that some people in the area reported hearing an explosion.

Birkwood was built in 1860 as a family home before becoming a hospital for mentally handicapped children.

It has been derelict for several years and there have been claims it is haunted by the ghosts of former patients.

A boy called Michael is said to stalk the spiral staircase where he fell and a girl’s voice has been heard crying and singing from empty rooms.

Visitors and staff at the hospital reported electrical disturbances and mysterious footsteps.

Birkwood is being redeveloped as a boutique hotel, but it is understood no work was taking place and no builders were on site when the collapse happened at around 6pm on Tuesday.

Glasgow Paranormal Investigations filmed an episode of their series Haunted Planet TV there.

And the crew reported it was one of the most active locations in which they had filmed.
